Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic

The Alpiner Extreme Automatic collection now welcomes four new and smaller 39 x 40.5-millimetre models. This more compact and universally appealing format comes in three dial colours: turquoise, fir green or pebble beige on a steel bracelet; the beige version is also available with a rubber strap. Like previous models in the collection, this variation is powered by the AL-525 calibre, water resistant to 200 metres and boasting a 38-hour power reserve; its more restrained dimensions make it the perfect compromise between a sporty and a sport chic style.

The iconic Extreme case could be described as almost square or almost round, combining the flexibility of a perfect circle with the imposing shape of a square softened by rounded edges. One thing is certain: the new 39 x 40.5-millimetre format gives this Alpiner Extreme Automatic a more compact and thus edgier feel, making it ideal to be worn either on a bare wrist on a long hike – or discreetly beneath a shirt sleeve in a business meeting.

The smaller size doesn’t diminish its performance in any way, either: here as ever, the Alpiner Extreme Automatic exudes Alpina’s sports ethos. The dial features the brand’s mountain emblem, as do the crown and the counterweight on the seconds hand, each stylised summit recalling those of the birthplace of the brand in the Alps. The Alpiner Extreme Automatic is ready to roam much further than its native mountains, though: its screw-down crown and grip ensure this go-anywhere timepiece is water resistant to 200 metres and perfect for all kinds of lake and ocean adventures.

The various versions of the Alpiner Extreme Automatic offer as many invitations to venture into the great outdoors. This model comes in three variations fitted with steel bracelets, ready to withstand everything the elements can throw at them and firmly secured to the wrist by a double deployment clasp.

The first model features a turquoise dial that’s a positive enticement to go off exploring. Its radiant hue, rarely seen in watchmaking, conjures up everything from the invigorating chill of mountain lakes to lagoon snorkelling expeditions. A second alternative sports a fir green dial more evocative of the mountain slopes of the brand’s Alpine home. The third timepiece to come on a steel strap features a beige dial recalling the ramparts of the Swiss Alps in summer – rocky inclines just waiting to be tackled by mountaineers. The same dial colour is also available on a fourth variation that comes on a matching rubber strap.

True to its sporty, chic and impactful style, Alpina has taken care to provide a satin finish for the case and bracelet links. As well as being a traditional decoration in fine watchmaking, it’s also a fitting cladding for a sporty timepiece: the innumerable bumps and scratches that invariably come with the Alpiner Extreme Automatic lifestyle will leave scarcely a trace. A polished finish is reserved for the piece’s vanishing lines on the bezel surround, crown and case, as well as the outer edges of the bracelet. Collectors will also appreciate the hand-polished appliqué hour markers.

For the dial, this condensed Alpiner Extreme Automatic naturally houses the essentials: three hands and a date display. Like its larger siblings, the timepiece is powered by the AL-525 Calibre, a tried and tested movement boasting a 38-hour power reserve that can be admired through the anti-reflective sapphire crystal back; the sapphire crystal on the dial side benefits from the same coating.
